ITINERARIO

AMAZON RAINFOREST MANU NATIONAL PARK 

Travel itinerari:

Day 01: Cusco – Manu cloud forest – Paraizo inn lodge.

At 05:30 a.m. we depart from the city of Cusco by mini van, Then climb up to the high zone of Paucartambo, Along the way we”ll enjoy the views of the Andes, mountains and snows. This day during the trip to Manu park we will make stops at different important places and the first place wil be in Ninamarca wich was a cementery of Lupaka culture, Continuing the trip we”ll arrive at Paucartambo town where we”ll enjoy a delicious breakfast. Continuing along on our journey we”ll arrive at Ajanaco at 3560 meters above sea level where is the entrance of the  Manu National Park, From here we”ll beging to descend through the mysterious cloud forest, full of orchids, ferns and variety of other native plants of the high jungle. We will take about an hours walk through this area to observe the ritual dance of the Andean cock of the rock, (Peruvian national bird). With any luck we will see a host of colorful birds and several monkeys in the area.

In the afternoon we”ll arrive at our lodge at Pilcopata, 650 msnm (meters above sea level) with bathrooms and showers available in every room.

DIA 02: PILCOPATA – ATALAYA PORT –HUMMINGBIRD LODGE

After our breakfast we”ll continue our journey by mini van for about an hour to Atalaya port. On the way you could see many animal such as, groups of Monkeys, birds, Macaws, woodpeckers, vulture,  Oropendolas, There we will board a boat to travel down Alto Madre de Dios river for an exciting 6 to 7 hour trip towards our next lodge.  Along the way we will be able to observe egrets, fishing birds and the most spectacular of all, the condor.  In addition to the variety of birds we will also see many other interesting animals native to the Amazon. In the middle of the trip we will make a brief stop at the indigenous community of Diamante to learn how the people live their lives in this jungle setting. We then continue on the powerful Rio Alto Madre de Dios until we arrive at Pueblo de Boca Manu where we have the chance to see people working at a variety of jobs. Traveling another 20 minutes will bring us to our lodge, the Hummingbird Lodge.

DIA 03: BOCA MANU LODGE – LIMONAL – CASA MACHIGUENGA LODGE

Very early in the morning our journey continues by boat on the Rio Manu where we begin to notice why Manu is so important. This part of the trip will take us about 5 or 6 hours into the reserve until we reach our evening’s camp. Along the way we will have the opportunity to see the great diversity of flora and fauna onthe riverbanks of the Rio Manu. Among the animals we may see will be turtles, caiman, monkeys and with any luck a jaguar.  In the afternoon we arrive at our camp, Casa Machiguenga. After a brief rest we will prepare to go on our first walk into the jungle to observe various animals and trees.  Some of the trees that we will see have survived more than 1000 years and have never suffered cutting or harvesting at the hands of man.

Casa Machiguenga. We return to camp for the night (in beds). Bathrooms and showers are available.

Casa Machi: This is a tourist camp with comfortable double rooms.  This camp was constructed with help from the Peruvian government.  The actual work was done by native people of Manu.

 DAY 04: CASA MACHIGUENGA LODGE – SALBADOR LAKE –TROCHA  MAQUISAPA

This morning we will spend our time visiting Salvador lake about 20 minutes away from our camp by boat and a 15 minute walk into the jungle. Cocha Salvador is home to the river otter and we will travel by catamarán so we can see these animals in their groups of 8 to 10. We will also encounter a great variety of exciting birds, black caiman up to 5 or 6 meters long and the ever present howler monkeys.  A little later we will walk along pathways in the tropical jungle to understand more of how it functions and the secrets it holds.

We will spend the night in camp.

Optional – Nighttime walk to observe nocturnal animals.

DAY 05: CASA MACHIGUENGA – OTORONGO OXBOW LAKE– BOCA MANU LODGE

After a delicious breakfast we will board our boat and be on our way to visit  Otorongo lake about 40 minutes away from our camp. From a tower 45 meters in height we will be able to see more river otter and more of the impressive tropical jungle. We then continue on up Rio Manu to the entrance of Limonal.  Before we leave the Manu Reserve we will take our last walk into the tropical forest to climb a tower to enjoy the view including many different species of birds.  From there, we once again board our boat to return to the Hummingbird Lodge, arriving in the afternoon.

There will be the opportunity for an optional walk along nearby paths.

DAY 06: BOCA MANU LODGE – AGUAS CALIENTES – ARPIA LODGE

Early in the morning we will board our boat to go to visit the colpa de loros.  Here at the colpa de loros, hundreds of different species of parrots come to feed on the mineral rich clay along the riverbanks.  The minerals in this clay aid in digestion and helps neutralize toxins in the birds’ systems.  After viewing this interesting behavior we will continue on along the river to our next lodge.  During this part of the trip we will stop to relax in the warm thermal baths. (This is an optional activity.) As we continue our travel along the Rio Alto Madre de Dios we will have many opportunities to see various animals like monkeys and capybara.

Tonight we stay at the Arpia Lodge to rest.

DAY 07: ARPIA LODGE – ATALAYA –CUSCO

Unfortunately, this will be our last day in the jungle.  After breakfast we return by boat the Puerto Atalaya, where our van will be waiting us.  The first 4 hours we will travel by the high jungle (cloud forest) and we will have the last opportunity to see more animal like the woly monkey and the famous peruvian national bird Andean cok of the rock). Our lunch will be on the way at 12:00 pm.  Then we will travel back to the beautiful city of Cusco.

We will arrive to Cusco between 5:00 and 6:00p.m.

To get to Manu National Park we have to travel from Cusco to Atalaya port by car and the next days by boat by alto Madre de Dios river and Manu river, until to get to the reserve zone of Manu National Park., The first day we’ll pick up you from your hotel at 05:00 am, during the trip we’ll do some hike through the tropical forest, In the hiths jungle you can see woolly monkeys (mono choro) and the famous cock-of-the-rock, which is the national bird of Peru.
