DETAILED TRIP ITINERARY

DAY 01: PUERTO MALDONADO – CEIBA SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE – TAMBOPATA

We will wait for you at the bus terminal or at the airport in the city of Puerto Maldonado for the transfer to our office (Orellana Expeditions), then you will have free time for breakfast and last minute shopping.

We will take our boat and travel along the Madre de Dios River to the port of Sandoval Lake where we will make a stop at the park ranger checkpoint to present our entrance tickets to the Tambopata National Reserve.

From here we will take a 4 kilometer walk through the rainforest to Sandoval Lake, along this walk we will have the opportunity to see some animals such as monkeys, birds, peccaries, tapir, snakes, etc.

Upon arriving at Sandoval Lake we will use a paddle canoe to cross to the other side of the lake where our lodge is located (typical jungle lodging). Welcome to our lodge and we will immediately give you your rooms with all the amenities available, towels, bathroom with private showers etc.

After a restful rest we will enjoy our lunch, and later we will go into the Amazon jungle and we will walk for an average of 3 hours to enjoy a walk through the rainforest and see monkeys and other animals such as peccaries (wild pigs) etc.

NIGHT WALK ACTIVITY:

Our last activity of the day will be a night walk through the jungle with flashlights to look for nocturnal animals such as spiders, tarantulas, frogs, toads, snakes and different types of insects. Dinner and rest.

DAY 02: SANDOVAL LAKE – OBSERVATION TOWER – TAMBOPATA

After enjoying our breakfast we will embark on our rowboat to visit Sandoval Lake (habitat of piranhas, giant otters, black caiman), this lake is home to many animals that are in danger of extinction and we will have the opportunity to see many wild animals such as different types of birds. Herons, agretas, cormorants, jacanas, toucans, vultures, also different types of monkeys, (the most common to see are the squirrel monkeys or friar, cotomono, black machín, pichicos and with luck the sloth bear).

The most important and most sought after by our clients are the Giant Otters or River Wolves. Otters are very shy animals and live in groups of 8 to 12 individuals and feed 100% on fish and especially piranhas. These animals can be seen very frequently when they are fishing or playing with the fish they just caught and sometimes sleeping on dry logs that are in the water. Then we will return to our lodge to enjoy our delicious lunch.

After lunch we will take a walk of approximately 30 minutes to a tower 45 meters high, from this point we can see Lake Sandoval and the canopy of the giant trees in this part of the jungle and with luck we will be able to see monkeys such as spider monkeys and howler monkeys and some birds such as toucans, woodpeckers, eagles, macaws, etc.

CAIMANEO ACTIVITY:

Tonight we have another night activity and this time it will be caimaneo, we will visit Sandoval Lake at night to see caimans and we will do this with our flashlights, on a good night you can see more than 20 caimans and many frogs.

DAY 03: CEIBA SANDOVAL LAKE LODGE – PUERTO MALDONADO – CUSCO

This day we will have a very early breakfast and then we will prepare our things to return to Puerto Maldonado. Before leaving this Amazon jungle we will visit the PALM COLLPA, unique in its kind in the world. Here we will observe different types of parrots and macaws feeding on the dead wood of the palm trees. The macaws found minerals and calcium in the dry trunk and it is the reason that they eat the dry trunk day by day.

Then we will take a 3 km walk to the Madre de Dios River where our boat with an outboard motor will be waiting for us to take us to Puerto Maldonado and end of our trip in the Amazon. Afterwards we will take you to the bus terminal or to the airport of this city.

End of our Orellana Peru Travel service.

PALM COLLPA:

It is a palm forest that is located on the shore of Lake Sandoval, many of the palm trees are dead and some are alive and have fruits such as aguaje which is an edible fruit for man. Parrots and macaws discovered this place many years ago and today you can see many of these animals here feeding on the fruit of the palm trees and eating the dry trunk of the palm trees,
