Discover Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain: A Hidden Treasure in Peru
Introduction to Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain
Located at 4,900 meters above sea level, Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain offers visitors a natural wonder unmatched by Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain. Nowadays, this place receives fewer visitors compared to Vinicunca, which attracts thousands of tourists daily. Unfortunately, the large influx of people has caused a negative impact on Vinicunca. In contrast, Palcoyo Mountain presents itself as a hidden gem, with three colorful mountains resting peacefully close to each other.
Unlike Vinicunca, the intensity of the red, blue, green, white and violet colors on Palcoyo Mountain is second to none. Moreover, reaching Palcoyo only requires a leisurely walk of approximately 30 minutes through a well-marked path. Therefore, this destination offers a fascinating view and is less physically demanding. This route does not require the use of horses, making it suitable for all people, including seniors and children.

After approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes of travel, we will arrive at the picturesque town of Cusipata, where we will first enjoy a delicious breakfast.
Then, we will continue our journey to the town of Checacupe. Here we will make a stop to admire three historic bridges, each built with different materials and in different times. First, we will see the Inca bridge, made of straw and small pieces of wood braided with animal skins, similar to the famous Inca bridge of Qeswachaca. This bridge served the Incas in ancient times.
Second, we will observe the Colonial Bridge, which dates back to approximately 1665. This bridge, built by the Spanish, is made of stone and lime and cement mortar.
Finally, we will explore the Republican Bridge, built with iron and cement, which is currently used by vehicles and people.
Next, we will continue in our vehicle for approximately 1 hour and 30 minutes more until we reach the Palcoyo Mountain, located 4,700 meters above sea level. From this point, we will begin a walk of approximately 30 minutes to the viewpoint of the majestic Rainbow Mountain and the Red Valley. This place is unique due to the three small mountains of vibrant colors and the impressive Red Valley, from which a red river with an intense hue is born, something that is not seen anywhere else in Peru.
In addition, we will have the option to visit the Ccacca Loma Stone Forest, located about 20 minutes more walking from the Rainbow Mountain (this visit is optional).
During the journey, we will be able to observe a variety of South American camelids, such as llamas, alpacas and groups of wild vicuñas. We will also see Andean communities that preserve their traditions from the time of the Incas.
Finally, after exploring the Palcoyo Mountain, we will return following the same route. We will stop at our restaurant to enjoy a delicious buffet lunch. Then, we will return to the city of Cusco, with an estimated arrival around 6:00 p.m.

FAQs
What is the difference between Palcoyo and Rainbow Mountain?
The common question among travelers is, “What is the difference between Palcoyo and Rainbow Mountain?” Below, we offer a detailed comparison to help you decide which of these mountains is the best choice for your adventure.
First of all, although both mountains feature spectacular color formations, there are some notable differences between them. For one, Rainbow Mountain (or Vinicunca Mountain) is located in the Ausangate region and is famous for its stunning visual phenomenon that has captured attention on social media. However, with this popularity comes large crowds and a more challenging hike.
In contrast, Palcoyo’s Rainbow Mountain offers a less demanding alternative. Unlike Rainbow Mountain, Palcoyo is less well-known and therefore less crowded. This means that you can enjoy the beauty of the multi-colored mountains without the need to wait in long lines for a perfect photo.
In addition, the route at Palcoyo is more accessible to everyone, as the climb is shorter and gentler. So, if you prefer a less challenging but equally beautiful experience, Palcoyo is an excellent choice. In short, while Rainbow Mountain offers a stunning visual spectacle with high tourist demand, Palcoyo provides a calmer and more accessible experience, ideal for those looking to enjoy nature without large crowds.
In conclusion, if you are looking for a more relaxed and less crowded experience, we recommend the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain. However, if you are attracted by the fame and challenge of Rainbow Mountain, it is also a fantastic option, just with more visitors and a more demanding route.
Important Facts about Palcoyo
What is the Rainbow Mountain of Palcoyo?
The Rainbow Mountain of Palcoyo is a stunning set of colorful peaks that, like Vinicunca (Rainbow Mountain), features a variety of striking colors. This is due to a mineralization process that has occurred over millions of years, giving rise to its vibrant color palette.
Where is Palcoyo, the Rainbow Mountain?
The Rainbow Mountain of Palcoyo is located 124 km southeast of Cusco, at an altitude of 4,900 meters above sea level. Compared to Vinicunca, Palcoyo is at a lower altitude, but it still offers spectacular views.
What can you see on the Palcoyo Mountain?
In addition to its unparalleled natural beauty, the Rainbow Mountain is home to a variety of wildlife, including llamas, alpacas, vizcachas, and condors. On the route to Cerro Colorado, you will be able to explore an impressive stone forest, formed naturally millions of years ago. From there, you will also have a close-up view of the majestic Ausangate Mountain, the largest in Cusco.
How high is the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain?
Palcoyo is located at 4,900 meters above sea level (m.a.s.l.), 300 meters below the altitude of the Vinicunca Rainbow Mountain, which is at 5,200 m.a.s.l.
Why does it have those colors?
Similar to Vinicunca, the Palcoyo Rainbow Mountain features vibrant colors due to the minerals present in the area, such as red clay, sandstone, and copper oxide. It is believed that millions of years ago, this region was completely covered by water, which allowed the deposition of sediments that contribute to Palcoyo’s unique colors.
What other places can you visit around Palcoyo?
Although Palcoyo’s main attraction is its Rainbow Mountain Range, the surrounding landscape offers other natural wonders. On the way to Palcoyo, you’ll discover an impressive stone forest with huge rocks and striking shapes. In addition, the mountain range is accompanied by an impressive deep red valley, which will make you feel like you’re on Mars.
As if this weren’t enough, you’ll have the opportunity to go trekking accompanied by llamas and vicuñas. Furthermore, to make the most of your trip, we recommend exploring the district of Checacupe. There, you’ll be able to appreciate three bridges from different eras: Inca, colonial and republican.
How to get to the Palcoyo Mountain Range?
For an optimal experience, we recommend taking this route with an authorized travel agency. The tour to Palcoyo usually lasts only one day. Normally, the excursion leaves at eight in the morning from Cusco and returns around seven in the evening. In addition, many agencies include stops at other tourist attractions in the area, such as the Raqchi Archaeological Complex, the Four Lagoons or Checacupe, allowing you to take advantage of every minute of the trip to explore different places.
