SALKANTAY TREKKING TO MACHUPICCHU 5 DAYS

DETAILED ITINERARY OF THE TREK:

DAY 01: CUSCO – MOLLEPATA – SORAYPAMPA CAMP (3900 m)

At 4:45 am we will board our vehicle and travel towards the town of Mollepata for an average of 2 hours and 30 minutes approximately where we will enjoy our delicious breakfast. Then we will have free time to make the last purchases for the trip or visit a little the colonial town of Mollepata.

After this brief stop we will continue the trip for 30 minutes until we reach Challacancha or Cruz pata where we will begin our adventure to Machu Picchu. Here our guide will introduce us to the entire team of people who will accompany us during the trip and they are the muleteers with their horses, who will be in charge of carrying our camping equipment and food for the entire trip. This day the walk will be in 2 different parts, the first part is from Challacancha to the Soraypampa camp and the second part is from Soraypampa to the Humantay lagoon.

The first walk is an average of 3 hours in total 12 km, we will walk along an almost flat path until we reach the Soraypampa camp (camping place) here we will enjoy our typical Peruvian lunch, then we will prepare for the second walk, we will leave the luggage in our camp and we will walk to the turquoise blue lagoon that is the Humantay (4200 meters above sea level), here in the lagoon we will have enough time to know from edge to edge this beautiful lagoon and talk about the history of water and the tutelary Apus of the Incas. Later we will return to the camp where we will spend the first night under a sky full of stars. Our camp offers typical huts with tents and flasks where you will rest very comfortably.

DAY 02: SORAYPAMPA – SALKANTAY BREAK – CHAULLAY CAMP (2900m)

After enjoying our nutritious and delicious breakfast we will begin our second day hike. The first 3 hours we will walk along a steep path to the highest point of the trekking which is the Salkantay Pass (4700m) from this point we will be able to appreciate the spectacular views. panoramic stories such as the Humantay and Salkantay snow-capped mountains. The Salkantay snow-capped mountain is the second highest peak in the Cusco region and one of the most important and sacred of the Andean man known as the Apu Tutelar de los Incas. After making a stop at the Salkantay Pass, the continuation of our hike is pure descent until we reach our second camp which is in Chaullay. At noon we will make a stop in the Huayracmachay sector (3900m) to enjoy our delicious lunch prepared by our professional chef. Then another 3-hour walk downhill until we reach our Chaullay camp (2900m above sea level).

DAY 03: CHAULLAY – SAHUAYACO BEACH – SANTA TERESA CAMP (1550m above sea level)

This day we will walk through beautiful landscapes crossing rivers and small waterfalls, then through the high jungle where you can see Peruvian coffee and cocoa plantations and finally with a dip in the Santa Teresa hot springs.

We will leave our camp very early and begin our adventure in the Amazon jungle where vegetation is abundant and the presence of wild animals is very frequent and you can see different varieties of birds and one of them is the cock-of-the-rock. which is the national bird of Peru, You can also see many flowers such as orchids, bromeliads, ferns etc. We will pass by many crystal clear rivers that come down from the Salkantay snow-capped mountain and we will stop at some waterfalls to take some photos, it will undoubtedly be one of the most spectacular hikes of our entire trip. We will arrive at Sawayaco beach for lunch time, After our lunch we will continue the trip to the Santa Teresa camp where we will spend the third night. Free afternoon, Those who wish can go to the Cocalmayo hot springs, the entrance fee is 10 soles.

19:00 hrs will be dinner at our camp and then everyone will rest to be with good energy for the next day.

DAY 04: SANTA TERESA – LLAQTAPATA – HYDROELECTRIC – AGUAS CALIENTES (2000 m)

5:30 am breakfast at the camp and then we will begin our walk through a tropical geography known as high jungle or jungle eyebrow, which is characterized by having a great variety of tropical flora and fauna. In this area the local people are dedicated to the planting of different products and fruits such as coffee, cocoa, bananas, papaya and the most important is the plantations of coca leaves (sacred plant of the Incas). To learn more about these plants we will visit a farm or fruit plantation and coca leaf cultivation farm where our guide will explain the importance of these crops. We will continue the hike uphill along the original Inca trail for an average of 3 hours until we reach the archaeological site of Llaqtapata. Here we will have enough time to rest and enjoy the panoramic view that this place offers and in the distance you can see the mountains of Huayna Picchu and Machu Picchu. After visiting Llaqtapata we will continue the hike downhill until we reach Hidroeléctrica where we will enjoy our delicious lunch.

The last part of the hike is from Hidroeléctrica to Aguas Calientes. This hike lasts an average of 2 hours and 30 minutes. We will walk along the entire railroad until we reach the town of Aguas Calientes and finally to our hotel where we will spend the last night. We offer double, matrimonial and triple rooms with private bathroom and shower plus basic services.

DAY 05: AGUAS CALIENTES – MACHUPICCHU – OLLANTAYTAMBO – CUSCO.

This last day is the most important for many travelers because we will visit the Inca city of Machu Picchu.

At 4:30am we will leave our hotel and then begin the hike to Machu Picchu. The hike is an average of 1 hour and 30 minutes walking slowly uphill along the Inca trail. For many it is a unique experience to walk up and appreciate the sunrise step by step.

Finally we will arrive at the entrance gate of the Inca city of Machu Picchu and before entering we will meet up with our group and then we will begin the tour along one of the circuits that is already established by the Ministry of Culture. The first thing we will do is to locate ourselves at the highest point called the Guardian’s House from where you can see the entire Inca citadel of Machu Picchu and from this point you can take the best photos like those on postcards. Then we will begin the tour and with the help of our professional guide we will learn step by step about the history of this Inca city of Machu Picchu. We will visit the most important points of Machu Picchu for an average of 3 hours, then we will have free time to tour the Inca city or climb Huayna Picchu or Machu Picchu Mountain if you have an entrance ticket. (coordinate with the agency about the availability of entrance tickets to these places).

After visiting and learning all about Machu Picchu we will return to the town of Aguas Calientes where you can enjoy your lunch. In the afternoon we will take the train back to Ollantaytambo and then to the city of Cusco on our bus. Time to arrive in Cusco 19 hours.
