Detailed Itinerary: Tours Fishing, Adventure and Nature in Jungle Trips, Peruvian Amazon
TOUR DAY 01: PUERTO MALDONADO – MONTE AMAZONICO LODGE
At 9:00 AM, we will begin our excursion. First, we will travel by boat along the Madre de Dios River for approximately 45 minutes until we reach our lodge. Along the way, we will be able to observe a wide variety of birds and groups of turtles. Once at the lodge, we will be assigned rooms, all equipped with full services.
In the mid-morning, we will take an introductory walk through the dense rainforest, where we will have the opportunity to admire giant trees that are more than 1000 years old. During the tour, we will also be able to observe flocks of birds, such as oropendolas and yellow-headed owls, and, occasionally, we will see monkeys feeding on the fruits of palm trees and wild pacay.
At noon, we will enjoy lunch at the lodge. Then, in the afternoon, we will take a walk of approximately 3 hours through the rainforest, during which we will learn about the ecological importance and secrets of this ecosystem. We will have the opportunity to see groups of white-lipped peccaries (Tayassu pecari), monkeys and a wide variety of birds, including macaws, parrots, toucans, woodpeckers and orioles, among others.
At night, we will go into the jungle for a night walk in search of different species of animals, such as frogs, toads, tarantulas, snakes and various varieties of insects.
TOUR DAY 02: WALK TO LAKE SANDOVAL – GIANT OTTERS – ROWING BOAT ON THE RIVER – LODGE
We will wake up very early and after a good breakfast we will walk for approximately 1 hour until we reach the Sandoval Lake reserve. It is a wildlife sanctuary for giant otters or river otters, black caiman, white caiman, various species of macaws and parrots, kingfishers, turtles, monkeys, herons and cranes among other species of rainforest fauna. Sandoval Lake is a biodiversity reserve with more than 1000 species of birds.
To observe and photograph all the wildlife that exists in this lake we will use a rowboat. We will take a walk around the lake and look for the family of giant otters that can grow up to 2 meters as an adult and are very vulnerable because they were persecuted by hunters and are currently in danger of extinction and can only be seen in sanctuaries that are protected by the Peruvian state. Many resident birds such as herons, kingfishers, hoatzin or shansho which is a pre-historic bird, turtles, macaws, parrots and even a sloth in the trees near the lake. In this meandering lake we can see different types of ecosystems that exist and it is surrounded by palm trees, aguajes, shihuahuacos, ceibas, aquatic plants that are habitat for many animals that exist.
After our activity and enjoying nature we will return to our lodge to enjoy our lunch.
In the afternoon, from the dock, we will enjoy the sunset on the banks of the Madre de Dios River and then we will take a boat ride along the river and look for the group of capybaras that usually come out in the afternoon to the banks of the rivers to look for their food and are easy to see.
TOUR DAY 03: ZIP LINE – CANOPY WALK – SPORTS
With the howling of the howler monkey and the screech of the parrots and parakeets we will wake up and then we will enjoy our delicious breakfast. This morning we will enjoy an extreme sport above the trees. We will climb a ladder to the top of the trees where there is a platform from where we can see the landscape and the top of the trees and perhaps the spider monkey and howler monkey that are always in the top of the trees. At this point we have 2 hanging bridges to walk and enjoy nature. Then we will start with the zip line which consists of flying from tree to tree through metal cables that have different dimensions and different speeds. Afterwards we will enjoy a typical lunch.
In the afternoon, we will take a boat to a special place, ideal for fishing. At this site, we will combine several modalities: the typical sport fishing of Tambopata, traditional local techniques and, in addition, fishing using meat or chicken bait, which is done throughout the day. This place is highly recommended, as it offers good opportunities for fishing, although the results depend mainly on our patience and willingness to enjoy the experience.

Adventure Fishing in Jungle Trips: Experience the Amazon in Peru
The Tambopata National Reserve is one of the most breathtaking destinations for nature and adventure enthusiasts. It offers a wide range of ecotourism activities, from boat rides and forest walks to expeditions, adventure sports, and birdwatching. Additionally, the freshwater rivers of the region provide the perfect setting for exciting sport fishing—though this activity takes place outside the reserve itself.
The Payara:
One of the biggest draws for anglers in the area is the Payara, an iconic fish known for its impressive size and strength. The technique to catch this prized species involves casting vibrantly colored lures from the banks of black volcanic stones, into the river’s currents—a thrilling experience full of action and anticipation.
For those seeking other legendary catches like the Pacu and zúngaros, the most effective method is using dead natural baits in the “Muyunas” or deep pools along the riverbanks. To maximize your chances, we recommend using Shimano Baitrunner reels and multifilament fishing lines, ideal for handling the fierce fights these giant fish put up.
