Waqrapukara: An Unmissable Archaeological Site in Cusco
Waqrapukara is an important archaeological site located in the community of Huyqui, in the province of Acomayo, Cusco, at 4,300 meters above sea level. This complex was built by the pre-Incan culture of Canchis and, after its conquest, was perfected by the Inca culture, which gave it great religious value. In this place, the Incas performed ceremonies in honor of Mother Earth and the Apus, their tutelary gods.
In 2017, Waqrapukara was declared a cultural heritage of the nation by the Ministry of Culture of Peru. This site, which probably functioned as an Inca sanctuary, has impressive terraces, watchtowers and a main square, where rituals and ceremonies were held in honor of their deities.
